Lahore Court Grants Bail to Christian Couple in Blasphemy Case, Signaling Hope for Legal Reform in Pakistan's Controversial Laws.

On October 18, 2023, a Lahore sessions court granted post-arrest bail to a Christian couple in a blasphemy case. Additional Sessions Judge Mian Shahid Javed approved their bail, each secured by surety bonds of PKR 100,000 (approximately $360).

The case was registered under Section 295-B of the Pakistan Penal Code on September 8, following a complaint from their neighbor, Mohammad Tamoor. The accused couple, Kiran Bibi and Shaukat Masih, were alleged to have thrown torn pieces of the Holy Quran from their house's roof in the North Cantonment area (for more details, click here).

Prompt police intervention prevented potential violence, leading to the couple's arrest. Various minority rights activists and those concerned about the situation of minorities in Pakistan hailed the court's decision as a victory for justice. They also applauded the legal team for their effective arguments that secured relief for the couple.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding the misuse of blasphemy laws, emphasizing the necessity for legal reforms to prevent false accusations and curb mob violence.
